Финальная модификация операционной системы Ubuntu Linux 8.04 LTS доступна для загрузки с сайта разработчиков.
По сравнению с предыдущей версией программная платформа Ubuntu Linux 8.04 претерпела серьезные изменения. Участники проекта улучшили интерфейс операционной системы, а также обновили входящие в состав дистрибутива компоненты. Так, например, Ubuntu Linux 8.04 включает пятую бета-версию браузера Firefox 3, а применяющийся по умолчанию медиаплеер теперь позволяет работать с каталогами онлайновых видеосервисов, в частности, YouTube. Разработчики повысили скорость загрузки ОС, а также усовершенствовали средства доступа к дискам.
Одним из наиболее значимых нововведений стал инсталлятор Wubi, позволяющий устанавливать программную платформу Ubuntu на существующий Windows-раздел без потери данных. Впоследствии пользователи при необходимости смогут удалить Ubuntu как обычную Windows-программу через панель управления.
Наряду с версией Ubuntu 8.04 LTS Desktop Edition для персональных компьютеров свет увидела серверная модификация платформы - Ubuntu 8.04 LTS Server Edition. Кстати, статус LTS (Long-Term Support) новых операционных систем означает, что разработчики будут выпускать для них апдейты и оказывать пользователям техническую поддержку в течение трех лет. Приложения для платформы Ubuntu 8.04 намерены распространять более трех десятков компаний, в том числе Adobe, Google, Real Networks, Nero, Skype, Corel, Parallels и Fluendo.
